Great Southern touring route

If you’re looking to get out of Melbourne for a few days, buckle up for a sensational drive around Victoria’s Southern Coastline and see great beaches, landscapes and history.

Melbourne to Anglesea

Head for the Great Ocean Road towards Anglesea and check out the Anglesea Golf Club for a hearty bistro meal overlooking kangaroos grazing on the fairways.

Anglesea to Warrnambool

Take an early morning stroll along the Anglesea River then get back onto the Great Ocean Road to see golden beaches, towering cliffs and charming villages. Stop off at Lorne, the surf beach is amazing. If you’re feeling adventurous, take a zipline through the rainforest hinterland at Otway Fly Treetop Adventures. Grab some lunch at Apollo Bay afterwards.

Take a detour to Cape Otway Lightstation and see the vast Southern Ocean views before carrying on to Loch Ard Gorge and Warrnambool for the night.

Great Ocean Road to the Grampians

Take a leisurely walk along Warrnambool’s Foreshore Promenade in the morning then drive 90 minutes north to the southern tip of Grampians National Park. Delve into regional Aboriginal heritage at Brambuk - The National Park and Cultural Centre in Halls Gap.

After lunch, take a bushwalk along the Grampians Peaks Trail and climb high for lofty views and natural vistas. Tick off the must-do sights: Boroka Lookout, Reeds Lookout, The Balconies and Mackenzie Falls.

The Grampians to Ballarat

Head northeast to Ararat for a taste of regional vineyards at Halls Gap Estate or Grampians Estate. A 50 minute drive away is the gateway to the Pyrenees Wine Region through the town of Avoca. Stop for lunch at Blue Pyrenees Estate.

Explore Victoria’s gold rush history at Sovereign Hill in Ballarat - an outdoor museum recreating the gold diggings. For dinner, visit Craig’s Royal Hotel and soak up the historic themed luxury.

Ballarat to Spa Country

Head to Daylesford for Australia’s premium spa country. This region is famous for its mineral spring waters, make a visit to Hepburn Bathouse & Spa or Salus Spa.

Spa Country to Melbourne

Before heading back to Melbourne browse Daylesford’s main street for specialty chocolates and barista coffee. Make a detour to Trentham to the Red Beard Bakery for superb coffee, pastries and sourdough. And keep heading through Woodend to Mount Macedon to lush private garden estates for incredible views of the city.
